Today Jan and I have reached our destination - GIAL - ie. Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics.
Yee-haa! Here we are in Tex-as!
We rugged ourselves up at Honolulu airport in anticipation of the 'chill' only to find ourselves 'coo-ooking' along the way! I had a small drama as I was about to board the plane at Honolulu. I was one of the last in the queue, when the hostess sent me back with my carry-on bags!.. "You can't take that 4-wheeler on board!" "There's no more room in the overhead lockers!" Can you believe it.. too many people had too much carry-on bags, and mine needed to go 'underneath' with a couple of others before we could leave. I was truly relieved to see all my bags appear at Dallas!
We stopped over at Phoenix airport, for a change of planes only and arrived in Dallas to a pleasant sunny-but-crisp 'Canberra-type of' winter's day'... We have been warned of a VERY cold change coming on Monday.
Jan and I have had a lovely welcoming reception at GIAL with a room each prepared for our time here at the Guest House. We arrived in time for a hot lunch, but also had plenty of snacks available in the 'shared basket of goodies' in the communal lounge/dining room, to keep the 'worms at bay'. Could you believe I scored some bread and bananas for tomorrow's breakfast! Now how's that for a reception! Here's a photo of tonight's snack - a turkey and Swiss Sub with pumpkin pie and a hot cup of tea. All very delicious. We have done very well with many delicious meals in Hawai'i and look forward to some Texan-style fare.
Both Jan and I have been 'lying low' today, after checking-in this afternoon at GIAL. Jan recognised some people who have worked in Australia at our lunchtime meal, and one lady, Cathy, has offered to take us out shopping in the morning for some weekend supplies.
It was good to get the WiFi working in my room, and to Skype Mum et al in Sydney this afternoon -US time. Yes, we have finally arrived safely for our studies. The program with Orientation will start in full swing on Monday.
